A client abandons a cart, requests the status of a delivery, or asks for a confirmation code. If the response arrives after an hour, the conversation and sometimes the sale are already lost. Conversational automation means building useful responses for these moments without the team having to manually track each message.

For companies, SMS remains one of the most direct communication channels: it doesn't depend on an installed app, it doesn't compete in the same way with a full email inbox, and it can support two-way dialogues. Authentication and fraud prevention

For product teams, conversational automation also includes transactional communications. Use simple language and a single main action in each message. "Your order is on the way. Reply with 1 for details or 2 for help" is easier to follow than a long text with multiple instructions. Personalization should help, not create discomfort. First names, order numbers, and real status are useful; excessive details are not necessary.

Build error scenarios as well. What does the customer receive if they respond with a text that doesn't match the options? What happens if an OTP code expires? Who takes over the conversation if the request exceeds the automatic rules? These decisions make the difference between a flow that reduces work and one that generates additional tickets.

Measure conversation quality, not just delivery

Delivery rate is essential, but it doesn't tell the whole story. For conversational flows, track response time, confirmation percentage, resolutions without human intervention, transfers to support, conversion rate, and unsubscribes. Each indicator shows a different part of the customer experience.

If messages are delivered but few customers respond, analyze the timing of sending and the clarity of the request. If many misunderstood responses appear, simplify the options. If the unsubscribe rate increases, reduce frequency or segment the audience more strictly. Good automation adjusts based on real behavior, not assumptions.
